50 Years Ago — May 15, 1969

   Hospital Graduates New Nurses — Twenty-six student nurses of Edmundston Regional Hospital School of Nursing were awarded diplomas at the 1969 graduation exercises held Sunday afternoon.  Outstanding prize-winner was Sister Julienne Cormier of Caraquet.

Hamlin Votes To Accept Saturday Mass — St. Joseph parish of Caswell and Hamlin voted May 4, to accept the privilege of Saturday fulfillment of Sunday mass obligation and has scheduled a 7 p.m. mass on Saturdays for this purpose.

25 Years Ago — May 18, 1994

Everybody Reads — Vive la France et l’Espagne! Twenty-one students from Madawaska and Van Buren, were in Paris with their French/Spanish teachers, Berthe Garcia from Van Buren High School and Don Clavette from Madawaska High School, and bus driver Doug Giroux from Madawaska. The group spent their April vacation touring France and Spain.

Breaking Ground — The sun broke through the clouds, temperatures warmed up and good fortune seemed to smile on those gathered in a field on 11th Avenue in Madawaska for the groundbreaking ceremonies of the new elementary school project. The school will open in September of 1995.

10 Years Ago — May 13, 2009

Little Heros –– Desiree Belanger, 9, and Aubre LeClair, 3, alerted the Lavoie family about the fire in their chimney at around 7:45 p.m. last Thursday. They were out walking in a field near the home when they saw flames. They ran back to tell their parents, who called 911. Madawaska Fire Chief Norm Cyr said 27 firefighters responded to the home on 26th Avenue. Cyr said there was no damage to the home, as the fire was contained in the chimney.
