50 Years Ago — May 1, 1969

   Deacon Cyr To Be Ordained — Deacon Phillip Cyr, 25, son of Mrs. Yvonne Cyr and the late Mr. Louis Cyr, will be ordained a priest in Saint Louis Church, Fort Kent on Saturday, May 24. The ceremony of ordination will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Peter Terety, D.D. Apostolic Administrator of Portland.

Motel Listed In Mobil Travel Guide — The Gateway Motel in Madawaska has won a listing in the 11th edition of the Mobil Travel Guide, the country’s best known national travel guidebook, it has been announced by the Guide’s editors.

25 Years Ago — May 4, 1994

1994 Mr. Madawaska — The Mr. Madawaska 1994 winner was Chad Dufour. With pageants going on throughout the Valley, the one that received the most laughs was put on by the high school students at Madawaska. Project Graduation raised nearly $1,000 during this pageant.

Ouellette Construction To Build School — Ouellette Construction of Madawaska expects to start construction of the new elementary school in Madawaska within a few weeks. Superintendent Tom Scott said that Ouellette was the lowest of two bidders at $4,014,104.The only other bidder was the P.L. Willey Construction Co. of Caribou. There was less than a 1 percent difference in the bids, said Scott.

10 Years Ago — May 6, 2009

Mill Workers To Lose Jobs ‘Indefinitely’ –– Fraser Papers in Madawaska announced last week it plans to curtail production of commodity groundwood paper grades on paper machine No. 6 at its paper mill in Madawaska for an indefinite period starting the week of May 4. As a result of the production curtailments, 100 affected employees at the Madawaska operations will be laid off indefinitely.
