Crusader boys finish with winning record, qualify for preliminary playoff game

VAN BUREN, Maine — At the beginning of the 2018-2019 basketball season, Van Buren Crusaders boys basketball Head Coach Steve Lapierre said the team was aiming for the postseason. The No. 8 Crusaders could hit the mark with a win in the Class D preliminary tournament game at home against No. 9 Washburn (6-12) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

The Crusaders finished with a record of 3-15 last year and didn’t qualify for the playoffs. In December, Lapierre said that the team was shooting for more this season and indeed the team finished with a winning record of 9-8.

“We hope to obviously improve on last year’s record and just keep improving with a goal of making it to Bangor,” Lapierre said in December, referring to postseason tournament play.

The winner of the Van Buren/Washburn match up will go on to play No. 1 Woodland (16-1) in the Class D quarterfinals on Monday, Feb. 18 at 3:35 p.m. in Bangor.

The full Crusaders roster features: Mikal Ayotte, Casey Bellamy, Emanuel Deschaine, Brady Laplante, Eric Laplante, Colby Lavoie, Blake Martin, Noah Pelletier, Luc Perreault, Eddie Saucier, Brenton Soucy and Rudy Quinonez.
