Maurices closing its Aroostook Centre Mall store

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The women’s clothing store Maurices in the Aroostook Centre Mall is closing in late January.

“Unfortunately, due to underperformance of this store, we did make the decision to close,” said Megan Timm, social media and public relations manager with Maurices.

Specializing in women’s fashion, Maurices is a part of the publicly-traded, New Jersey-based Ascena Retail Group, which also includes the brands Lane Bryant, Ann Taylor and Loft.

The Presque Isle store is among more than 1,000 Maurices across the U.S. and Canada. Other Maurices stores in Maine are located in Augusta, Waterville and Auburn.

The last day of business is planned for Jan 26, Timm said. She also noted that fans of Maurices can still shop online.

The store is the latest to exit the Aroostook Centre Mall, following the closing of Kmart in 2016 and other anchor tenants in the decade prior.

Retail clothing stores that remain open in the mall include JCPenney, the last bigbox anchor store; Label Shopper; Olympia Sports; Trader Joe’s Outpost; and Acadia Medical Supply. Other retail tenants include Dollar Tree, Kay Jewelers, Bath & Body Works, Ruby Tuesday, Chopsticks, VIP Tires & Services and Harbor Freight Tools.

The mall also hosts organizations such as the United Way of Aroostook, which recently opened a free book shop called the Book Nook; the Freedom Church; and the Northeastern Workforce Development Board.
