Local hospital earns top designation

FORT KENT, Maine — Northern Maine Medical Center has earned the Top Rural Hospital Award from The Leapfrog Group.

Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization focused on quality and safety of American health care.

Peter Sirois, NMMC president and CEO, said, “We are so very proud of everyone, from our volunteers to our Board of Trustees, for each of their contributions in making this honor possible.”

Sirois acknowledged the tremendous efforts in transparency, clinical quality and safety displayed across the organization, resulting in its recognition at the national level and translating into exceptional quality care for the population served.

The top honor, which recognizes the nation’s preeminent quality hospitals, goes to the highest performing hospitals on each year’s Leapfrog Hospital Survey and features facilities in four categories: general, rural, teaching and children’s. NMMC earned the distinction in the rural hospital category.

Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said, “Leapfrog is proud to recognize the recipients of our most elite award for safety and quality. We’re encouraged by the achievements of top hospitals, as well as all of the hospitals that compete for this award by submitting the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Their transparency and determination should be a point of pride in their communities.”

The survey collects and transparently reports hospital performance across many areas of hospital care, including preventing infections, reducing C-sections, use of technology to prevent errors, surgical quality, and leadership policies and practices. The scoring uses 28 national performance measures to evaluate individual facilities in six domains of quality: inpatient care management, inpatient surgeries, pediatric care, medication safety, maternity care and infections.

In addition to satisfying the quantitative criteria, hospitals must also meet the committee’s qualitative requirements for overall excellence, which includes a review of data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other publicly available information pertaining to the hospital.

At Leapfrog’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., NMMC was one of 17 hospitals honored nationwide. Sue Devoe, RN, chief experience officer, was present to accept the award on behalf of NMMC.

Last month, NMMC’s received the Press Ganey Pinnacle of Excellence Award.
