Crash in Cross Lake kills moose

CROSS LAKE, Maine — The driver managed to escape injury but a single vehicle accident proved fatal for a northern Maine moose on Monday, Dec. 3, according to the Maine State Police.

Raylee Shaw, 20, of Caribou, was driving a 2017 Chevrolet passenger vehicle southbound just after 5 p.m. when she came upon a moose standing in her lane of Route 161 in Cross Lake, according to investigating Trooper Adam Stoutamyer.

As Shaw came upon the moose, another vehicle was passing the Chevrolet so Shaw was unable to avoid the moose by swerving into the passing lane, according to the trooper. She also couldn’t stop the vehicle in time and struck the moose, which Stoutamyer said weighed about 300 pounds. The other car did not stop.

Shaw, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured in the accident but the moose died before the trooper arrived.

The Chevrolet received significant damage and Beaulieu’s Garage of Caribou towed it from the scene.
