The Butch Shaw award is presented annually to Aroostook County boys and girls from classes B, C and D who are outstanding soccer players and also exemplify the characteristics of respect and sportsmanship.

The award winners are selected by a committee consisting of officials from the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials, who met Wednesday, Nov. 14, to choose this year’s recipients.

The committee chose Alex Ezzy of Caribou to be the recipient for Class B boys and Madison Michaud of Presque Isle for Class B girls.

Panelists selected Houlton’s Jamie Brown and Fort Kent’s Reece Pelletier in Class C.

Kate Levesque of Central Aroostook and Jenna Dugal of Madawaska were the co-winners for Class D girls, while Ben Thomas of Central Aroostook and Andrew Nadeau of Madawaska shared the award for Class D boys.

Clyde “Butch” Shaw, a Mars Hill native, became a member of the NMBASO in 1972, making him one of the first officials of the sport in Aroostook County. He also was a well-known and respected varsity basketball and baseball coach at Presque Isle High School. He loved sports and was known for his motto “Hustle, Pride, Defense.” He was diagnosed with leukemia in July 1985 and passed away in October of that year.

The award in his name was established in 1986.
