Time to feed the deer again

To the editor:

Soon the snow will come and so the deer will filter into town for something to eat. Here in Allagash, a handful of people will feed hundreds of deer thousands of pounds of grain to try to preserve what is left of our dwindling deer herd. This a yearly thing that has been going on for years and will continue.

The reason we do this feeding is because the traditional deer yards have been clear-cut and sprayed with a dangerous herbicide. You would think that a “green certified” company such as Irving would leave at least some cover around town for the deer we feed, yet we hear the equipment coming closer and closer.

I would suggest that the next time you buy “green certified” lumber from your local Home Depot store or any other retailer that you come and see what is happening to thousands and thousands of acres of wildlife habitat in northern Maine before you make your purchase. You might want to reconsider who’s “green certified” lumber you are buying.
