Eliminate week of female moose hunt to aid herd

To the editor:

Read an interesting story on Oct. 26 in the Bangor Daily News about ticks decimating New England moose. I have a question for Lee Kantar, the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and wildlife’s moose biologist. If we are worried about losing moose due to ticks, why do you issue 450 permits to kill cows (female moose) only? These female moose are pregnant during this time Oct. 22 to Oct. 27. If you shoot one cow moose, you shoot 2 or 3. That would mean 900-1340 extra moose are killed for no reason. Can we eliminate the week of cows only to keep our moose herd healthy?
