Driver OK, moose killed in single vehicle crash

FORT KENT, Maine — A Wallagrass woman escaped with minor cuts when her vehicle crashed into a moose on Route 161 just south of New Canada on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Nicole Belanger, 29, was traveling southbound in a 2014 Jeep just before 6:30 a.m. when the moose ran out of the woods and into her travel lane, according to Sgt. Jeff Clark of the Maine State Police.

Belanger was wearing a seatbelt and the Jeep’s airbags also deployed, according to the investigating officer, Trooper Andrew Levesque.

The vehicle received significant damage and was towed from the scene.

The moose died at the scene.
