Philip L. Dufour (1947-2018)

VAN BUREN, Maine – Philip L. Dufour, 71, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at the Aroostook House of Comfort, Presque Isle. He was born May 22, 1947 in Van Buren, a son of the late Fernand and Corinne (Plourde) Dufour. He was a graduate of Van Buren Boys High School, class of 1965, and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Providence College in 1969.
Phil married his best friend and soulmate, Cindy Ronat, on April 10, 1969 in Van Buren. Together they joined the US Air Force for several years, concluding their military service close to “home” at Loring Air Force Base, Limestone.
Upon their return to Van Buren, Phil took over the family businesses, Gagnon’s Hardware & Furniture and North Country Propane. Cindy joined Phil in the businesses in 1987, and expanded to include Dufour Home Furnishings and The Kitchen Store, which they operated until 2004. For the past 14 years, Phil and Cindy continued to work together at S.W. Collins Co., Caribou. He enjoyed his time there while developing many lasting friendships and serving as a mentor to those learning the business.
Phil was an active member of St. Peter Chanel Parish and served on many committees, including singing in the parish choir. One of his greatest joys was his involvement with Cursillo retreats at Christian Life Center, Frenchville, for over twenty years.
Above all else, Phil loved time with family and took great joy hosting family and friends at the family camp on Long Lake. An avid outdoorsman, he was most content while on a lake, river or in the woods, sharing his love for the outdoors with those closest to him.
He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Cynthia M. Dufour of Van Buren; three children, Joel Dufour and his wife, Kate, of Lincolnville, Amy Hebert and her husband, John, and Sarah Brown and her husband, Donnie, all of Van Buren; two sisters, Jeannine Eno of New Hampshire, and Patricia Petrich and her husband, Robert, of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Ariana, Henry, Sam, Louie, Quinn, and Zachary; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Philip was predeceased by one son, Aaron Dufour, in 1978.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Van Buren. Relatives and friends may greet the family Tuesday 6 – 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday morning 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
