Councilors appoint interim school board member

FORT KENT, Maine — Following the resignation of Maine School Administrative District 27 board of directors member Richard Stoliker, Fort Kent town councilors appointed Sarah Ashley on Monday night to fill the position on an interim basis.

The councilors voted unanimously to approve Ashley, a Fort Kent resident and proprietor of Sash Engineering. She will serve on the board of directors until next March, when the seat will be filled in the annual town election.

Stoliker, who represented subdistricts 5, 6, 7, and 8 on the board, indicated in his letter of resignation that he was stepping down “due to personal reasons” and indicated that “it has been great to serve.”

He was elected this past year and his term would have expired in 2021, according to Superintendent Ben Sirois.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the councilors set the date for a public hearing to discuss potential changes to the town’s general assistance ordinance. The councilors are considering altering the income threshold for applicants to the program, per state recommendations. They agreed to schedule a public hearing on the matter to take place at the start of the next regularly council meeting, which is set to start at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the Fort Kent Municipal Building.
