Car fire destroys Quonset hut, firefighters save Wallagrass home

WALLAGRASS, Maine — Fire destroyed a Quonset hut and its contents Saturday but firefighters managed to save a nearby home.

Fifteen volunteer firefighters with the Fort Kent Fire Department responded to a caller’s report of a burning vehicle at 3 LaMarre Road. The property belongs to Linda Ouellette, whose son Carl parked his 2009 Nissan Rogue in the storage hut. Someone discovered that the vehicle was engulfed in flames and called for assistance at 11:25 a.m.

“We don’t know what caused the car to burn,” Fire Chief Endee said.

Endee declared the Nissan, the Quonset hut and everything within it a “total loss.”

“There were a lot of tools and equipment that were destroyed,” he said.

The exterior of Linda Ouellette’s nearby home received slight damage to the vinyl siding, but there was no structural damage to the home and Ouellette is able to remain in the home, which is insured.

Members of the Eagle Lake and North Lakes fire departments assisted the Fort Kent firefighters.

Nobody was injured as a result of the fire and firefighters cleared the scene at 1:03 p.m.
