Allagash Family Fun Day

ALLAGASH, Maine — Lawnmower races and barbecued chicken were highlights of the first annual Allagash Family Fun Day on Saturday, Aug. 4.

The Allagash Community Development Group sponsored the day long event at the Allagash Community Center.

“We wanted to give back to the community for all the support that they have given us,” said development group member Colleen O’Leary McBreairty.

Volunteer members of the Allagash Fire Department sponsored a chicken barbecue as a fundraiser for the department and the Allagash Historical Society served hot dogs and hamburgers later in the afternoon to raise funds.

“I am not sure of the dollar amount, but both groups were pleased with the amount that they raised,” McBreairty said.

Children’s games included cornhole and a duck race.

Adults had some fun of their own, racing on modified lawnmowers.

“The lawnmower race was one of the most exciting events, so we were talking about having  two different classes next year as well as a women’s race,” McBreairty said. “The dunk tank was a big hit as well.”

McBreairty’s son, state Sen. Troy Jackson may have made a few Republicans happy at the event as he was the one sitting in the dunk tank.

McBreairty said it is difficult to determine how many people attended the fun day since folks came and went throughout the day.

“We were very pleased with the turnout in spite of the rain earlier in the day,” she said.

The development group also expects to bring the Allagash Family Fun Day back for round two.

“We plan to expand and improve on the event for next year,” McBreairty said.
