Rescue personnel from Caribou Fire and Ambulance needed to use a hydraulic device to extricate a woman from her vehicle after the sedan flipped onto its side Tuesday on Route 161 in New Sweden.
“The woman was trapped in her vehicle,” said Caribou Fire Capt. Brian LaJoie, “so we had to extricate her using the Jaws of Life. Basically, we had to cut the roof off the car and get her out that way.”
LaJoie said a citizen called 911 to report the accident at about 3:04 p.m. Tuesday. Rescue personnel and members of the Maine State Police found the woman trapped in her four door sedan, which was on its side
There were several thunderstorms in the area Tuesday and the woman, whose name was not available, told first responders that her car hydroplaned and she lost control. The sedan drifted off the road and landed on the driver’s side in a small wooded area, according to the fire captain.
The woman was the sole occupant of the vehicle. After rescuers got her out, they transported the woman to Cary Medical Center in Caribou to be treated for injuries that were not life threatening, according to LaJoie.
The vehicle, however, was declared a “total loss,” he said.
