50 Years Ago — August 1, 1968
Dead Fish Wash Up On Madawaska River –Thousands of dead suckers were sighted along the east bank of the Madawaska River this weekend. They appear to have been swept to the bank of the river behind Victoria Street and above the Fournier Bridge. Local wildlife officers were alerted and made a tour of the river from Temiscouta Lake to the City but it appears that the dead fish are seen only within the city limits.
IGA Opens –The new Gervais IGA Store in Madawaska officially opened Wednesday and present for celebration, were Jerry Fitzpatrick, Kathleen Gervais, Herby Gervais, Aurore Gervais, George Martin and Reggie Tompkins.
25 Years Ago — August 4, 1993
Republique Rock –– Foire Brayonne President Gilles Volpe and international rock n’ roll artist Alannah Myles, were at a press conference in Edmundston, N.B., on Saturday. Myles performed in front of a crowd of more than 15,000 fans. The Myles concert was billed under the “Republique Rock” heading in reference to the legendary Republic of Madawaska.
Top Inspectors — Three local immigration and Naturalization Service Inspectors were recently presented performance awards for exceptional performance of their daily duties. Recipients were Claire Gervais of the Madawaska and Van Buren Ports of Entry, Daniel Thibodeau, Madawaska Port, and Billy Evans Madawaska and Van Buren Ports.

Check Out The Garden Of Health — Several Van Buren children, their moms, and the library director visited Delano and Jocelyn Laplante’s family garden in Cyr Plantation on Monday, July 21. The children learned about growing fruits and vegetables in northern Maine. They also picked and ate fresh strawberries, raspberries, peas and carrots, in addition to sampling several other tasty fruits and veggies that the library provided ofr the event.
