CARIBOU, Maine — Despite suffering multiple injuries, Joseph Guimond, 21, of Connor crawled to the road and signaled for help after crashing his vehicle into a utility pole Wednesday morning.

A passerby called 911 call at about 4:40 a.m. to report the accident on Route 1. Arriving police and rescue personnel found Guimond’s truck wrapped around the utility pole.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt, “which probably saved his life,” Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan said in a press release.

Police indicated that Guimond, the sole occupant, had been driving north when his truck, for unspecified reasons, drifted into the southbound lane and then off the road into the utility pole.

Guimond suffered multiple injuries but was still able to “crawl to the road and get help,” according to the Gahagan.

According to the release, rescue personnel transported Guimond to Cary Medical Center in Caribou before transferring him to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

The accident remains under investigation.
