Church to aid library with car wash, sale

FORT KENT, Maine — A local church will host a car wash, bake sale and craft raffle on Saturday, June 30, to benefit the Fort Kent Public Library.

The fundraiser will take place on Saturday, June 30 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Christ Congregational Church at 58 Pleasant Street in Fort Kent.

“The fundraiser is being organized by the Christ Congregational Church and staffed primarily by its members, including a strong showing from our Sunday school as the kids will be helping as well,” said library board member and CCC parishioner Dr. Kristin Hartt.

“As a congregation we feel strongly about giving back to the community and feel the library is an important institution in our town,” Hartt said. “Libraries stimulate learning and provide those without other means to access the internet and to access books for both pleasure and learning.”

The car wash will cost $5.

Baked goods as well as coffee, iced coffee and lemonade will also be for sale at the fundraiser event.

Visitors who purchase raffle tickets can win donated items such as a marionette, homemade jams and jellies, colorful pot scrubbers and artwork. The raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The church is still accepting crafted donations for the fundraiser.

Money raised from the fundraiser will be used to purchase new books for the library, although the library is also involved in a capital campaign, according to Board of Trustees Chair Steff Gagne.

The campaign is to raise funds to “bring the facilities up to date,” Gagne said. This includes rewiring the building, replacing lighting, replacing roof shingles, and repaving the parking lot as well as remodeling a business rental space downstairs in the library building.

The rental space has been unoccupied since last fall.

“That’s part of the problem we’re faced with,” Gagne said, in terms of being able to bring in income to support the library.

To donate funds to the Fort Kent Public Library capital campaign make checks payable to Fort Kent Public Library and send to 1 Monument Square, Fort Kent, Maine 04743.
