Students earn support specialist certificates

FRENCHVILLE, Maine — Through the health occupations program at the St. John Valley Technology Center, several students have explored the medical field and practiced basic nursing skills through clinical experience and internships.

During the past two years, group members have successfully passed and received two nationally recognized industry certifications and two state of Maine industry certification.

Last year, the students received American Heart Association HeartSaver First Aid and CPR certification, along with a state of Maine Certified Nursing Assistant certification. This year, they received American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS CPR/AED certification and Personal Support Specialist certification.

All 11 students have been accepted at the University of Maine Fort Kent, two into the allied health program and the other nine into the bachelor of science in nursing program.

“Nine of these young ladies are working in area facilities as certified nursing assistants and determined to become nurses,” said Kevin Lavoie, tech center director.
