Youth succeed at state Hotshot competition

PORTLAND, Maine — Eleven local youth competed in the Maine Recreation and Parks Association/Maine Red Claws Hotshot State Championships at the Portland Expo March 18.

Four of The County shooters finished as runners-up in the state — Adam Ayotte of Van Buren in the 9-10 boys’ division, Madelynn Deprey of Caribou in the 11-12 girls’ division, Eva Callioras of Easton in the 13-15 girls’ division, and Alex Oakes of Fort Fairfield in the 13-15 boys’ division.

Hotshots is a basketball skills competition that incorporates shooting, rebounding and dribbling. Points are accumulated by shooting from one of several hotspots on the floor in a one-minute time period.

The northern regional was held in Caribou on March 1.

Results of local shooters from the state competition are as follows:

Ages 9-10 girls: fourth place, Logan Curtis of Washburn, 51 points; fifth, Madison Oakes of Mapleton, 76; and seventh, Sadie Tardif of Mapleton, 47.

Ages 9-10 boys: second, Ayotte, 102 points.

Ages 11-12 girls: second, Deprey, 89 points; and third, Grace O’Connell of Presque Isle, 82.

Ages 11-12 boys: third, Bryce Martin of Fort Fairfield, 94 points.

Ages 13-15 girls: second, Callioras, 81 points; and third, Juliana Hundley of Presque Isle, 71.

Ages 13-15 boys: second, Oakes, 111; and fourth, Gavin Akeley of Presque Isle, 84.
