‘Tar Wars’ voting ends Friday

FORT KENT, Maine — In a program led by Northern Maine Medical Center, local youth are learning about the effects of tobacco and creating posters the public can vote on.

A program of the American Academy of Family Physicians, “Tar Wars” is being led locally by Dr. Silwana Sidorczuk and Rebecca Michaud, RN.

The tobacco-free education program for fourth- and fifth-graders teaches students about the short-term health effects of tobacco use, the cost associated with using tobacco products, and advertising techniques that target youth.

The public is invited to vote on student posters at NMMC’s main lobby; voting began Monday and will end Friday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. The top three winning posters will go to the state AAFP conference in April, where members will choose finalists.
