Lorraine Alice Deveau Ouellette (1921—2017)
WINOOSKI, Vermont — Lorraine Alice Deveau Ouellette, age 96, of Winooski, VT, passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at Our Lady of Providence in Winooski, VT.
Lorraine was born in St. Leonard, New Brunswick, Canada, on April 18, 1921, the daughter of the late Frank and Alice Deveau. She was raised and educated in St. Leonard and St. Basil, NB. After high school Lorraine attended a Normal school in New Brunswick and began her teaching career in a one room school house in the St. Leonard area. In 1972 she received her Bachelor’s degree in Early Education from the University of Moncton. While teaching in St. Leonard she met Rosaire Ouellette. They were married on July 15, 1946, and enjoyed almost 25 years before Rosaire passed away unexpectedly in June 1971. She spent 33 years teaching K-3 grades in Van Buren schools retiring in 1979.
In her retirement, in Maine and then in Delaware, Lorraine enjoyed an active social life, reading, going for walks, meeting new people, and playing bridge which she learned as a way to socialize after moving to Delaware. While playing she made many marvelous friends and had adventures all over the eastern seaboard traveling to numerous bridge tournaments with them. She moved to Delaware in 1981 to be with her beloved daughter, Rachel, who was expecting her first child. Following Rachel’s death in 1991 she spent time helping her son-in-law, Ray Fields, raise Tim.
Survivors include son, Daniel Ouellette and wife, Janice of Danville, VT; her grandchildren, Tim Fields and wife, Kelley of Wilmington, DE, Jeremy Ouellette and wife, Anja of Lebanon, NH, and Amanda Tanner and husband, Nick of Underhill, VT; and her son-in-law, Ray Fields and wife, Sharon. She also left five great-grandchildren, Kolja, Anika, Lucy, Luka, and Emmet.
In addition to her parents and husband, Lorraine was predeceased by her daughter, Rachel Fields, her brothers, Roland (who died in infancy) and Albert, and sisters, Irene (Desjardin Violet) and Lillian (Cannel) and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Fr. Scott Gratton at Our Lady of Providence on November 18th and her Interment Service will be held in Van Buren, ME, in the spring of 2018.
