Van Buren ATV chase ends in arrest of Caribou man
VAN BUREN, Maine — Local police charged Matthew Sands, 34, of Caribou, with multiple violations following a “short pursuit” of an ATV early Friday morning.
Officer Nate Chisholm attempted to stop an ATV on Alexander Road at about 1:30 a.m. Friday, but the driver kept going, according to a statement Van Buren police posted Monday evening on the department’s Facebook page.
Following a short chase, police apprehended Sands behind Marquis Farms and took him into custody, the post states.
Sands was charged with operating after suspension, failure to stop for a law enforcement officer, operating an ATV to endanger, operating an ATV at greater than reasonable and prudent speed, operating an unregistered ATV and two counts of violation of conditions of release, according to the statement.
No other information on the incident was immediately available.
The Caribou Police Department also had an arrest warrant out on Sands on a charge of failure to appear in court, according to Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan. The chief said Sands failed to appear on a charge from May of operating a motor vehicle while his license was suspended.
