Grant leads to five new rentals in town

FORT KENT, Maine — A $300,000 housing assistance grant the Town of Fort Kent secured last year has helped three property owners develop five new apartments in the downtown area.

The apartments are located above the Sears Hometown Store on West Main Street, over Century Theater on Hall Street, and on the first floor of a building that Jeff Bernier owns on West Market Street.

Department of Planning and Economic Development Director Steve Pelletier wrote the successful Community Development Block Grant.

“The apartments are very near completion,” Pelletier said on Oct. 6. “It was an excellent project to convert existing space that was not being used into beautiful apartments. The apartments will provide additional new residential units in the downtown to mostly low-to-moderate income tenants and replace some of the units that were lost in the fires in 2012.”

The owners of the properties, Bernier, Alan Susee and Ben Paradis, are required to match a minimum of 10 percent of the total project cost to build the apartments.

For more information about the program and the apartments, contact Pelletier at (207) 834-3507.
