Northern Maine General hosts fall blood drive

EAGLE LAKE, Maine — Northern Maine General will host their ninth annual fall Community Blood Drive on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Powell Memorial Gym on 36 Carter Street in Eagle Lake.

This free American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held from 12 through 5 p.m. Members of the community are encouraged to participate and walk-ins are welcome.

Since 2012, NMG has hosted Red Cross blood drives for the community. In 2015 the nonprofit organization began holding two per year, in May and October. This Halloween, they invite everyone to “carve out a new tradition” and give a donation that could save many lives.

Every day approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed for hospital patients across the country.

The actual blood donation takes about 10 to 12 minutes and NMG encourages participants to use the Red Cross’s RapidPass option. On the day of the drive, donors can go to to read pre-donation materials and answer questions regarding their health history. They then must print their RapidPass, email it to themselves or download it onto their mobile device. They will need to show their pass when arriving at the blood drive. RapidPass can save donors 15 to 20 minutes at the drive itself.

The Red Cross suggests donors maintain a healthy dietary iron level, drink an extra 16 ounces of liquid before and after donating, eat a healthy meal before giving blood and get a good night’s sleep. Participants should bring their donor card, driver’s license or two other forms of identification.

To register, call 1-800-RED-CROSS, Wendy Dube at (207) 444-5152, ext. 230, or visit and enter NMG or 04739 in the zip code field.
