Team Sawyer walks for epilepsy

FORT KENT, Maine — Team Sawyer will walk Sunday, Sept. 24, to benefit a Fort Kent resident with epilepsy, and the group invites anyone to join in the effort in their own community with the help of social media.

The local event will begin at 11 a.m. at the Fort Kent Pavilion, and participants will walk 1-2 miles.

The idea took root last year when Christine Chasse-Nonni of Fort Kent organized a group to walk in Freeport to support her son, who has a rare form of epilepsy. Many friends and family members wanted to participate, but couldn’t make it to Freeport, so  they organized #teamsawyer on Facebook to allow everyone interested to participate.

To join in, walkers should make a big sign that says #teamsawyer, along with their city and state, and then take a photo of the group with the sign and post it on the Team Sawyer public event page on Facebook, or at #teamsawyer. The group may walk 1 mile, 2 miles or whatever they wish.

Organizers said the response last year was overwhelming, and the New England Epilepsy Foundation made a video to commemorate the event.

Donations are accepted at Firstgiving.com; however, Team Sawyer members said support and awareness are the main goals.
