Injured hiker evacuated by helicopter at Baxter State Park

MILLINOCKET, Maine — Baxter State Park Rangers were assisted by the Maine Forest Service in the evacuation of an injured hiker.

Late Saturday afternoon, a 55-year-old Michigan man and Appalachian Trail hiker was injured as his leg became wedged between two rocks.

He had just begun descending the Abol Trail with his wife and daughter after completing a summit of the Hunt Trail to Baxter Peak.

The injury occurred at the top of the Abol Trail at approximately 4,600 feet elevation and 3.5 miles from Abol Campground.

Park Rangers responded after being contacted by the Penobscot Regional Communication Center.

Rangers were assisted by members of the Wilderness Rescue Team to evacuate the hiker.

The injured hiker was eventually transported to the Millinocket Regional Hospital for treatment.
