UMFK women top Rochester, 3-1

The University of Maine at Fort Kent women’s soccer team won its first contest of the 2017 season, by defeating Rochester College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Kendra Freund opened the scoring at the six minute mark as she knocked in a rebound from a shot by 2016 USCAA National Player of the Year, Sherifatu Sumaila.

Rochester tied the game up just before halftime as Christy Routheaux headed in a corner kick past UMFK keeper Valentina Green.

Sumaila then scored the game winner as she hit the ball from 15 feet out that was just past the diving Rochester keeper in the 56th minute. Natasha Merangoli added an insurance goal with eight minutes to go after taking a feed from Sumaila.

Valentina Green made 12 saves for the Bengals.

The women’s soccer squad is the defending USCAA champion. The team makes its home debut on Sept. 14 against the University of Maine at Machias.
