UMFK hires Brown as women’s coach

FORT KENT, Maine — University of Maine at Fort Kent athletic director Bill Ashby has announced the hiring of former men’s basketball player, Fletcher Brown, as the next women’s basketball coach at UMFK. Brown will start his duties immediately as he will also be coordinator of residential life programming.

Brown played two seasons for Coach Tom Bird on the men’s side, and then became Bird’s right-hand man last season. He helped coach the Bengals to their best record in over 30 years (23-9) as UMFK won their first-ever national tournament game, before falling to Illinois Tech in double overtime at the USCAA National Championships.

Brown was also part of the biggest win in Bengal men’s basketball history when the team defeated NCAA Division I, University of Maine a season ago.

“We are extremely happy to have one of our former student-athletes take over the reins of the women’s basketball program,” Ashby said. “Coach Brown is a consumer of our product, he knows the University, he knows system and we look forward to his success at UMFK.”

Brown started his college basketball career at Contra Costa Community College in the Bay Area of California. He was born and raised in San Francisco and came to UMFK as an English major in 2014.

UMFK will open the season with NCAA Division I, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, on Nov. 10.
