United Way hosts reading fun day

FORT KENT, Maine — Literacy and fun will become one at a Summer Reading Celebration Day at Fort Kent Elementary School on July 19.

The event is free to children of all ages and will include a bouncy house, face painting, bingo, crafts, book giveaways, games and prizes.

United Way of Aroostook and Katahdin Trust Company are sponsoring the reading celebration to promote literacy among children during the summer months when school is not in session.

The event is an extension of the UWA and Katahdin Trust Summer Slide Backpack Program which provides all Aroostook County first-graders with a backpack and three books for summer reading.

Volunteers from the Fort Kent Recreation Department will help facilitate the celebration day but children from all over the St. John Valley are welcome to participate and they need not be enrolled in any recreation program.

Summer Reading Celebration Day will take place 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, at the Fort Kent Elementary School.
