Warrior boys, Narraguagus girls, Summer Classic champs

FORT KENT, Maine — Fort Kent Community High School Warrior boys’ basketball Coach Derrick Cooper offered some advice to his players which proved instrumental in helping them come from behind and ultimately win the University of Maine at Fort Kent Summer Classic high school basketball tournament June 23-24.

“When we were down at the beginning of the game, I told my kids that basketball is a game of runs.  It’s not about who’s winning the game at the beginning, but rather who finishes the game the strongest,” he said.  “As a former competitive basketball player, I understand that there’s a lot of highs and lows during a game of basketball.  Minimizing the lows and maximizing the highs is what our main focus was.”

The Warriors defeated Caribou in a competitive championship game, which both entered 5-0.

“My kids have an interior drive and attitude of being competitive so it’s easy to keep them motivated,” Cooper said.  “The summer classic tournament is an opportunity for my players to have fun and be competitive with the game of basketball during the off season.”

Other boy’s high school teams that competed in the Summer Classic were Schenck, Pisquatacis Community High School, Fort Fairfield, Woodland, Wisdom, Madawaska/Van Buren and Ashland.

Warrior Eden Paradis took the tournament’s most outstanding player designation.

Narraguagus earned the top spot for the girls, having gone 5-0 in their games. Madawaska was second with a 4-1 record. Other girls teams were Shead, Fort Kent and Caribou.
