Wisdom High School holds annual sports awards

ST. AGATHA, Maine — On June 2, 2017, Wisdom High School held their annual athletics awards for their varsity sports teams. Teams and individuals were recognized for their participation, with some athletes receiving individual honors.

The boys’ soccer team, led by Coach Kevin Lavoie, was recognized.  The team finished with a record of 2-and-10, with the wins being the program’s first in almost three years.  Dylan Weyenth was recognized as the team’s MVP and was also selected to the All-Aroostook Class D team.  Freshmen Trevor Couture and Spencer Gervais were named Most Improved, with sophomore Mason Sirois receiving the Coach’s Award.

The girls’ soccer team made the playoffs this year under Coach Brandon Lavoie’s leadership.  The team upset Hodgdon in a preliminary round game, before losing to Madawaska in the quarterfinals. Junior Riley Theriault was named the team’s MVP.  Junior Bailey Bellefleur was recognized as an All-Aroostook selection.  Freshman Isabelle Gervais was recognized as the Most Improved, and sophomore Alyssa Banville was selected for the Coach’s Award.

The girls’ basketball team was recognized by first-year coach Derek Grivois.  The team’s MVP was senior Kim Blanchette. Junior Dorothy Harris was selected as Most Improved, and Riley Theriault received the Coach’s Award.

The boys’ basketball team finished the season at 8-and-8, and made a second consecutive trip to the quarterfinals in Bangor.  Coach Scott Pelletier recognized Kodey Cyr with the Coach’s Award, with Cyr also being chosen to represent Wisdom at the Aroostook League Senior All-Star game. Dylan Weyenth and Mason Sirois shared the Most Improved award, and junior Jack Guerrette was selected as the team’s MVP.  Guerrette and Cyr were both named to the All-Aroostook team.

Two Wisdom athletes took part in Alpine skiing this season, senior Nathan Chamberland and freshman Jacob Roy.  Roy was also named as a member of the All-Aroostook team for the season.  Coaches Tracie Boucher and Brandon Lavoie presented certificates to members of the girls’ and boys’ volleyball teams.

The varsity baseball team, under first-year Coach Jake Martin, finished the season 2-and-10.  The team’s MVP was freshman Jacob Roy, who was also selected to the All-Aroostook team.  Senior Andrew Guimond was recognized as the team’s Most Improved player, while Spencer Gervais was selected for the Coach’s Award.

Seniors Kimberly Blanchette and Nathan Chamberland were recognized earlier in the year as Aroostook League Scholar Athletes, with each chosen to receive a scholarship from the league.  The Athletic Department recognized junior Riley Theriault and freshman Jacob Roy as the choices for female/male sportsmanship awards.  Lastly, the top senior athletes for the Class of 2017 were Kimberly Blanchette and Nathan Chamberland.
