Bengals earn top seed
NORFOLK, Virginia — The University of Maine at Fort Kent men’s basketball team has been selected as the number-one seed for the USCAA Division I National Championships.
UMFK will open the tournament against Dean College from Franklin, Massachusetts, who will enter as the #8 seed on Wednesday March 1 at 2:00pm in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
The Bengals will make their second ever appearance after the 2011 team qualified in their first year in the USCAA. No men’s basketball team from Fort Kent has ever won a contest in the USCAA Championships. UMFK finished off the best regular-season in quite some time by going 22-8, including wins over the University of Maine and Washington Adventist, a perennial USCAA and NAIA powerhouse.
UMFK is led by seniors Joe McCloskey and Rosevelt Smith Jr. McCloskey averages 18 points and eight rebounds, while Smith Jr. is the only player in the nation in the top 30 in all three major statistical categories — scoring, rebounding and assists. The senior from Fairfield, Calif., averages 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists per contest.
