Bengals sweep Machias

FORT KENT, Maine – The University of Maine at Fort Kent women’s and men’s basketball teams defeated Machias on Friday night, Feb. 10, 2017. The women won, 68-25 and the men 114-59.

In the women’s game the Bengals got off to a blazing start as Madison Fenner hit four first-quarter three-point field goals. They led 24-6 after one quarter and 33-14 at the half.

Fenner hit two more in the second quarter to finish the half with 22 points. Machias went scoreless in the third quarter as UMFK stretched the lead to 57-14.

UMFK hit 42 percent of their shots and held Machias to just 17 percent from the floor.

Fenner led UMFK with 22, while Maleini Tanaki and Briana Lampkin each had 14.

In the men’s game, senior Fred Sanchez saved his best shooting performance for his final home contest as he hit nine three-point shots for his career high of 27 points.

The Bengals came out firing on all cylinders, hitting 69 points in the first half. UMFK used full court pressure in the opening 10 minutes to create turnovers that led to dunks and threes for the Bengals. UMFK hit 10 first half three pointers and 15 overall.

Senior Joe McCloskey had 25 and 7 rebounds, while Rosevelt Smith had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Bobby Syvanthong chipped in with 12 points and seven assists.
