Dogs must be licensed

MADAWASKA, Maine — Pet owners who have not yet registered their dogs for 2017 will soon hear from the local animal control officer.

The Madawaska Police Department reported on their Facebook page that the ACO will contact owners of unregistered dogs and serve them with a 10-day notice. If the dog(s) are not registered after the 10-day period, the MPD will issue a summons for court.

Some pet owners may not realize how vital licensing is; a pet license is yet another way to make sure a pet is protected if they become lost.

The department offered three reasons owners should license their pets:

  1. It’s the law. A majority of states require dog owners to license their pets. If your dog does not have one, you may be fined. The license tag should be on the dog’s collar at all times.
  2. It proves your dog is properly vaccinated. You can’t license your dog without getting its rabies vaccinations.
  3. Your dog has a better chance of being returned home if lost.
