Owl Jenna Dugal earns Butch Shaw award

AROOSTOOK COUNTY — Every year, a committee consisting of officials from the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials presents The Butch Shaw award to Aroostook County boys and girls from classes B, C and D who are outstanding soccer players and also exemplify the characteristics of respect and sportsmanship.

Among the winners this year was Jenna Dugal for the Madawaska Owls.

Class B — Boys: Nick Bartlett for Presque Isle. Girls: Madison Michaud for Presque Isle.

Class C — Boys: Tobyn Blatt for Limestone/MSSM. Girls: Aspen Flewelling for Houlton.

Class D — Boys: Ryan Player for Fort Fairfield and Jake Flewelling for Easton. Girls: Mackenzie Carter for Ashland and Jenna Dugal for Madawaska.

Clyde “Butch” Shaw, a Mars Hill native, became a member of the NMBASO in 1972, making him one of the first officials of the sport in Aroostook County. He was also a well-known and respected varsity basketball and baseball coach at Presque Isle High School. He loved sports and was known for his motto “Hustle, Pride, Defense.” He was diagnosed with leukemia in July 1985 and passed away in October of that year.

The award in his name was established in 1986.
